I changed the English name of the rabbit hole to Rabbit Crypt. Nothing momentous prompted it. Rabbit Hole is a common noun, so late one night, drinking coffee that had gone cold, I was thinking of a name that would belong to this space. This is where I landed. The name holds three overlapping shadows.
Rabbit hole. The hole Alice slipped into after the White Rabbit. Nothing seemed strange before you went in, but once you come out, the colors outside the window seem ever so slightly different. That is the kind of writing I put here. Writing that leaves you feeling that the world before and after reading is the same world, but somehow shifted by a handspan.
Crypt. An underground burial chamber. A space beneath a church where people rarely go. Like a dusty corner of an old record shop, it is a place only those who seek it out will find, where the oldest things lie sleeping. Writing swept up in a trend disappears with it. I think the writing I leave here should be something you can still hold in your hands as time passes, like an old leather jacket. Not an easy thing to do, though.
Crypto. A cipher. The root of cryptography, and a subject this space will often return to. Blockchain, AI, the structural changes technology brings about. The mechanisms hidden beneath what we see on the surface. Like a faint frequency picked up when you turn on an old radio before dawn, I want to decode the signals most people pass by, but that you cannot let go of once you tune in.
I want to let those things accumulate here, little by little. The other side of what everyone takes for granted. A very faint scream from a scene we smiled at and passed by. Things whose colors fade the moment a price tag is attached. Questions no one asked, but that come to mind when you are awake alone at three in the morning. Sentences that will feel like prophecy five years from now, but send a chill through a corner of your heart when you read them today. A space where, even after you close the door and leave, the faint sound of a rabbit’s footsteps follows you from somewhere deep inside.
In Korean, you can still call it the rabbit hole.
