In most organizations, leadership is the bottleneck. Not because leaders make so many decisions, but because all information converges on a handful of people. Like a highway tollbooth. Passing through takes three minutes, but the queue turns it into three hours. This is not a problem of inefficiency. It is a problem of structure. Inefficiency can be improved, but structure has to be redesigned.
So we tried assigning AI to an ongoing task force at Hashed as a "moderator," not a "manager." A manager has decision-making authority. A moderator only coordinates the flow. People still make the decisions. AI simply organizes and presents the information they need to make a judgment. Humans hold the knife; AI sharpens it. This distinction is the key. Using AI as a manager is automation. Using it as a moderator is augmentation.

The results were surprising. Processing access requests went from 3-4 hours to 2-5 minutes. We even saw bots coordinating deployments with each other. My AI handles the frontend, and a teammate's bot handles the backend, each checking the other's status. An AI organization layered over a human organization. Like the conscious brain handling strategy while the autonomic nervous system handles breathing.
There is a deeper implication. Communication costs in an organization of N people are said to scale with N². Grow from 10 people to 100, and costs rise a hundredfold. What if an AI moderator routes information in between? The cost could move closer to N instead of N². Economies of speed, not economies of scale. Twenty people working like 1,000 means the passion of those twenty people is unleashed in full, without being diluted by bureaucracy.
AI does not replace humans. At least not yet. AI lets humans focus on work that is distinctly human. Simply moving information around is no longer an inherently human task. Exercising judgment, making decisions, and taking responsibility are more human forms of work.
We have entered an age of redrawing that boundary.
